Remembering Tiananmen

Troops’ excesses ‘even worse than Japanese’ – The horror of a people attacked by its own army
“‘How could the Communist Party do this? How could they shoot children?’ asked a worker in blue overalls. Others pleaded with us to tell the world what happened. The West must stop all investments, they said, and condemn their government. No one, not even the Japanese or the Kuomintang or the warlords, had ever done this and this was their own government. But many were mute with horror. Nobody could find the words.”

… but apparently not remembering enough.

16 arrested in Tiananmen anniversary clampdown!
“At least 16 people were seized by police today as the Chinese government blocked demonstrations in Tiananmen Square, on the anniversary of the 1989 massacre of pro-democracy protesters.”

but no mention of Orwellian re-education … ahem …

Tiananmen Bloodshed Remembered

“Chinese officials have been ordered to watch a new documentary on the demonstrations, to persuade them that the crackdown was the only option available.”
“China sparked anger in the territory when it ruled in April that the Hong Kong people could not directly elect their leader in 2007.
“This year it’s important for people to show they will not be silenced,” said Law Yuk-kai, director of the Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor.”
